THE VISION

Almost 40 years ago, our founding fathers set out to create a fraternity that could provide an unmet need for the Latino community.  Almost 40 years later, we are still pushing forward and empowering many on campus from all different backgrounds.

“The Latino community was divided among several social groups at the time,” said Baltazar Mendoza-Madrigal.  Word spread quickly across the University of Iowa campus as the idea of a social fraternity that could unify the community grew. After much planning, the ideology and philosophy of this new organization was finalized on April 4th, 1986 at University of Iowa. Eighteen men gathered and founded Sigma Lambda Beta on the principles of brotherhood, scholarship, community service, and cultural awareness. These men came from all sorts of backgrounds and exemplify what Sigma Lambda Beta stands for today.

Membership has expanded beyond our Hispanic-Latino origins making us one of the most culturally diverse Greek lettered organizations across the nation. We are students, leaders, activists, and men of action. We continue to be on forefront of issues affecting the Latino/a/x community. We continue to maintain our pillars through our academic success, philanthropy, and community outreach.
